Lakeside Chautauqua

The Challenge.

For more than 140 years, Lakeside Chautauqua has welcomed thousands of families to the Lake Erie shore to take part in a summer experience dedicated to nurturing the mind, body, and spirit. The leadership of Lakeside wanted to test the community’s willingness and passion to make significant improvements to Hotel Lakeside, and brought our team on board to conduct the feasibility study.

The Strategy.

Knowing the close-knit Lakeside Chautauqua community well, our team strategically engaged them in the campaign planning process, asking them to share valuable feedback and insights in meetings, town halls, and surveys. As a result, we determined that the Hotel was not a high priority, and giving families a place to swim and be physically active was more important. The Lakeside Foundation Board of Trustees and Executive Leadership staff launched a $3 million capital campaign to build an in-ground swimming pool and pavilion, as well as a health & wellness facility.

The Result.

The community engagement activities paid off, and in less than six months, Lakeside exceeded its campaign goal. They raised a total of $3.4 million, which funded the Grindley Aquatic Center. During the campaign, Lakeside also received a $1 million gift to endowment—the largest single gift towards their endowment ever.
